Kiln 1.3.0 → 1.3.2: turn your object over in 3D wherever you run Kiln, and print things bigger than your printer

Kiln 1.3.0, 1.3.1 and 1.3.2 are about seeing what you made, and making things that used to be too big. Design something through your AI assistant and you can now turn it over in 3D right there in the conversation, no download and no round trip, and as of 1.3.1 that works on every install, not just Kiln’s hosted connection. If the finished thing is bigger than your printer, Kiln cuts it into pieces that fit and go back together. Kiln also reads CAD files now, installs into Claude Code with one command, and speaks the newest version of the Model Context Protocol, so a slow job hands you a ticket instead of freezing the chat. Shops get a bigger story too: hand Kiln a customer drawing and it answers, dimension by dimension, whether your machines can actually hold it. Most of this is free. The deeper engineering features are Kiln Pro, Business, and Enterprise.

Turn your object over in 3D, wherever you run Kiln

Until now, asking an AI assistant to design something got you a picture. Now you get the object: drag to rotate, scroll or pinch to zoom, look underneath it, check the back.

Where it opens depends on the app you are in, and Kiln works that out for you. There is nothing to configure and nothing to choose. When you connect, Kiln asks the app whether it can draw an interactive panel, and gives you whichever form that app can actually show:

  • Apps that can draw panels put the stage inline, in the conversation. Claude Chat and Claude Code in the Claude desktop app both do this: the model appears right where you are working, and you turn it over without leaving the conversation.
  • Apps that cannot get a link, and the stage opens in your browser beside your work. Same stage, same controls, in a browser window next to your session. The link lives for about 30 minutes.

Neither one is the lesser version. It is the same stage, the same model, the same controls, put where your app can show it. And because Kiln asks at connection time rather than keeping a list of apps, a client that adds panel support starts showing the stage inline on its own, with nothing to update on your side.

This started on Kiln’s hosted connection in 1.3.0; 1.3.1 brings it to every install. A locally installed Kiln shows the inline panel with no account at all, and signing in with a free account gets you the browser link too. A free install gets the same stage as a paid one.

This is built on MCP Apps, the interactive-interface extension to the Model Context Protocol. It is the difference between being told what you made and shown preview images, versus actually looking at 360° of it before you commit a printer, a spool, and nine hours to it.

Too big for your printer? Kiln cuts it into a kit

The most common wall in 3D printing is the build plate. A part that measures 340mm tall does not go on a 256mm printer, and scaling it down defeats the point when the thing has to fit something real.

Now Kiln cuts it instead. Hand it a model that will not fit and Kiln works out the fewest pieces that will, cuts where it makes sense (a neck, a waist, the narrow spot a shape already has) rather than hacking through the middle, and seals every cut face so each piece actually prints. It tells you honestly whether it found a natural seam or just divided evenly. Splitting is free. Kiln Pro works out how the pieces should attach, pins, magnets, or hardware, builds that into the parts, and tells you what the joint will hold.

Drop in a CAD file and print it, free for everyone

Kiln reads STEP now, the format every CAD program and machine shop speaks. Hand any Kiln tool a .step file and it becomes a printable model automatically, and a colored multi-part assembly keeps its colors and part names, ready for multi-material printing. One command sets up the converter: kiln install-step-backend. It works on Kiln’s hosted connection too, with zero setup on your side.

Bring in a model that arrived in pieces and Kiln keeps the parts named and placed, finds the biggest size everything still prints at, and proves the pieces really fit rather than guessing from a picture.

Add Kiln to Claude Code in one command

Kiln ships as a Claude Code plugin. Run claude plugin marketplace add codeofaxel/Kiln, then claude plugin install kiln@kiln, and every Kiln tool (design, slice, print, monitor, recover) is wired into your session with no manual setup. Requires uv, and Kiln keeps itself updated from there.

Kiln speaks the newest protocol, so slow work stops blocking you

Connect Kiln to Claude or any other AI client and it now uses the 2026-07-28 Model Context Protocol specification. The practical difference: long-running work (carving a texture, repairing a broken print file, generating an assembly booklet or a technical drawing) hands back a ticket you can check on, so a slow job never freezes the conversation. Nothing changes for older clients.

It also changed how ordering works. When you have a part professionally made, the price and the shipping choice now each come back as a real question in your app, and nothing is confirmed until you say yes. Previously the assistant was asked to check with you. Now the confirmation is built into the connection itself.

Your texture work goes further

Kiln has textured objects since well before this release. What changed in 1.3.0 is how far the engine reaches.

Your own image, around the whole object. Hand Kiln a photo or a pattern and it becomes real, printable surface texture across the entire model rather than one flat face: curved, organic, or imported. Kiln sizes it to print at a believable scale and tells you plainly when a pattern is too big for the object to show it properly.

Finishes you can shape. Flip which parts of a pattern stand proud, deepen the carve, soften it, or fade it out near the edges so it blends into the surface. Round things like balls and ornaments now wrap properly instead of seaming, and Kiln watches the overhang angle so a deep carve does not quietly become unprintable. Detail that was only painted on becomes detail you can feel. Downloaded and sculpted models often carry their finest detail in the image wrapped around them, so it vanishes when printed. Kiln reads those maps and raises the detail into real, printable relief. It only adds material, so walls never thin and your original file is untouched. Free (3 a month; unlimited on Kiln Pro).

Hand Kiln a customer drawing, get a straight answer (Kiln Business)

Drop in an engineering drawing (a PDF, or a photo of one) and Kiln reads every dimension and tolerance on the sheet, then tells you, dimension by dimension, whether your printers can hold them, how many good parts to expect per batch, and what would improve the odds: a different print orientation, a small tolerance ask back to your customer, or Kiln’s per-machine compensation. The answers come from how your machines have actually printed, not generic rules of thumb, and they sharpen every time you report a real measurement. Anything Kiln cannot honestly assess is listed for your review, never quietly passed.

Attach the CAD and the report adds material cost and print time, totalled across a batch and padded for the parts Kiln predicts will measure out of tolerance, so you are not quoting a perfect-world number. Kiln flags the holes that will need attention before you print them, not after the part is done. Kiln Enterprise adds fleet ranking (which of your machines is right for this job), your own quality bar (how sure you need to be before calling a job a safe yes).

First Article Inspection, drafted from your own work (Kiln Enterprise)

Some customers require a First Article Inspection report before they will accept a part, and filling one in by hand is a day nobody enjoys. As you design parts, print them, and log inspections in Kiln, it quietly builds the record. When an AS9102 report is due, Kiln drafts it from the work you already did rather than asking you to reconstruct it. Your reviewer verifies and signs. Kiln never fills the sign-off, because that signature means something.

More printers, and the plastics that need them

Duet printers work with Kiln now (beta). If your machine runs a Duet board, just tell your AI: Kiln connects it and drives it like any other printer, with both current and older RepRapFirmware, including the Vision Miner 22 IDEX v4. Nine more machines joined the catalog: the AON3D AON-M2+ and Hylo, INTAMSYS FUNMAT PRO 610HT, Vision Miner 22 IDEX v4, QIDI Plus 4, Q1 Pro, Q2 and X-Max 3, and the Creality Ender 3 S1 Pro. Most of them Kiln can drive directly through a connection you already have: the QIDI and AON-M2+ machines over Klipper, the Vision Miner over its Duet board, the Ender over USB. The AON Hylo and the INTAMSYS run closed firmware with no open control interface, so Kiln knows those machines and advises on them (materials, temperatures, what they can hold) without claiming to drive them. Bambu X1E and H2S now reach their real nozzle temperature, so high-temp filaments print without a false too-hot error.

Kiln also recognizes six advanced polymers as first-class materials: PEEK, PEI (1010 and 9085), PEKK, PPSU, and PPS, the plastics used for parts that face real heat, load, and harsh chemicals. It knows their safe handling, and when a material will not run on your printer it names the one thing stopping it: nozzle, bed, or chamber. Often you are closer than you think. Kiln Pro adds engineering-grade properties and printer-specific guidance for those materials, and Kiln Business answers whether a printed part survives a given solvent, fuel, cleaner, oil, sunlight, or food contact, answered for a real printed part rather than a lab sample. The cases that carry legal weight are Kiln Enterprise. Safety warnings are free for everyone.

Printing for electronics, without zapping them

Two additions for anyone whose printed parts hold circuit boards. ESD-safe (anti-static) filaments drain off static so a printed tray or fixture will not zap the boards it carries: Kiln Business picks and sources the right grade for your printer, and Kiln Enterprise adds what a shop needs to prove its parts pass an ESD audit. Separately, Kiln can help you pick a protective conformal coating for a populated board, flagging how it could fail and what you still need to prove (Kiln Business). Neither one approves a coating or signs off a board; that stays with a qualified person, and the safety basics are free for everyone.

A safety fix worth naming

Kiln’s real-time safety check reads every G-code command before it reaches your printer. Some senders and firmwares put a line number in front of each command, and Kiln was reading that prefix as the command, which meant a command that should have been flagged could pass. It now reads the actual command every time, and anything it cannot make sense of is refused rather than waved through. Reported by Dmitriy Filatov (Malder). Thank you.

Two related fixes: ordinary nozzle temperatures are no longer refused by mistake, and if Kiln does not recognize your printer it now says up front that it is running on generic safety limits, instead of looking like full protection.

Smaller things that add up

  • Recommend from the spools you actually own. Ask what to print something in and Kiln can answer from your real shelf and loaded filament instead of the whole catalog. It names the printer that has it, or tells you it needs a swap. Nothing suitable? You get an honest “you would need to buy this”.
  • Kiln cleans up after itself. Every agent session starts its own background Kiln, and closed sessions leave theirs behind holding memory. Kiln notices the pile-up, tells you in plain English, and closes the leftovers when you ask, checking that nothing is printing first. In a terminal: kiln trim.
  • Print checks tune to your filament and your printer (free). Warping, heat-stress, and bed-grip warnings follow the material actually loaded and the machine that will run it.
  • Iterating is free. Try as many looks as you like. Your free monthly designs are spent only when you download, print, or save one. Kiln Pro makes them unlimited.
  • Know if a shelf will lean before you print it (Kiln Pro). Kiln says which openings need a diagonal and how few will do, counts back panels, and gives you each brace’s length to print, cut, or buy.
  • Kiln packs your print plates (Kiln Pro). How many plates a kit takes and what goes on each one. With more than one printer, Kiln splits the work between them and tells you when the last plate finishes (Kiln Business).
  • Assembly booklets are better and generate quicker, and every booklet lands in your library with revision history, cloud sync, and proof of authenticity (Kiln Business).
  • Tidy your workshop (Kiln Pro). Archive a design to hide it from your list and restore it any time. Nothing is ever lost: every version, branch, and outcome is kept.
  • And the rest: honest answers about files Kiln cannot read, filament runout sensors working on Klipper, failed-print retries re-slicing properly (Kiln Pro), QR codes sizing themselves on any model (Kiln Business), glue guidance for PPS and Ultem (Kiln Pro), and Prusa Link saying up front that it cannot do custom speeds, then offering to reslice at the speed you wanted (Kiln Pro).

1.3.1: the polish pass

Two days after 1.3.0 we shipped 1.3.1, a quality release. Nothing new to learn; things you already use got faster and more honest.

  • The 3D stage reaches every install, as described above. This was the headline gap in 1.3.0 and it is closed.
  • Fixing a badly damaged model is much faster. Models that need a full rebuild, like scans with large holes or missing chunks, come back in a fraction of the time, with exactly the same result.
  • Hosted answers come back faster.
  • Signing in with a licence key unlocks everything it should. On Kiln’s hosted service some accounts signed in with a licence key were served the free version of an answer. Your plan is now recognised however you sign in.
  • Kiln says plainly when it could not establish something, so silence never reads as an all-clear.

1.3.2: the detail pass

1.3.2 finishes the job. It is a small release about the last few percent, the details you only notice when they are wrong.

  • Your logo prints exactly the way you drew it (free). Dashed lines stay dashed, sharp corners stay sharp, gaps stay open. If your artwork uses outlines, caps, or dashes, the printed mark now matches the file.
  • Decorated models come out as clean, watertight solids (free). Carving a logo or text no longer leaves hairline seams that make other tools reject the file.
  • Repair tells you what it could not fix (free). A mesh repair that left something broken now names the defect and what to do about it, instead of reporting success on a model it left untouched. And it will not “fix” an opening that is supposed to be there: a cup stays a cup.
  • Your design stands on your real print bed (free). Where Kiln knows which printer is yours, the 3D stage draws that machine’s actual bed with its name on it, and a part too big for the bed says so.
  • Material suggestions respect your hotend (free). A filament your printer cannot get hot enough to melt is no longer suggested, and if nothing in the catalog clears your printer’s limit Kiln says so rather than handing you a pick it cannot print.
  • More split pieces come back with pins in them (Kiln Pro). Kiln used to skip pins on some cuts it can now handle, like a panel with a brace behind it.

Upgrading

  • New here? Run pip install kiln3d, then follow the install guide to connect Kiln to your AI assistant: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, or any other compatible AI client. For Claude Code, the one-command plugin above is faster.
  • Already use Kiln? Run pip install --upgrade kiln3d to move to 1.3.2. The 1.3.0 release fixed the real-time G-code safety check described above, so 1.3.0 remains the minimum supported version for starting new work against Kiln’s hosted service from 5 August 2026. Monitoring, pausing, cancelling, recovering, and finishing anything already running are never affected, on any version.
  • On a paid tier? Upgrade to 1.3.2 too, so the decoration and drawing features line up.
